Hello everyone and happy summer! In today's blog post, we will explore a simple tool to help calm down stress and anxiety levels during any social situation. It is easy to remember, highly effective, and requires less than 5 minutes to ease your mind.
The 3-3-3 Rule combats sudden feelings of overwhelming anxiety, racing thoughts, or panic attacks by forcing your brain to focus on the environment around you. Instead of allowing yourself to be pulled into a negative anxiety loop centered around catastrophic what-ifs, this rule redirects your focus on external sights, sounds, and feelings to break this cycle.
By actively engaging in your sensory system, your brain activity will shift from the amygdala, your brain's fear-center, to the prefrontal cortex, your brain's logical executive center responsible for regulating emotional responses.
This practice grounds your mind into the here-and-now. Once you realize that you're safe in your current environment, a physiological signal lets your nervous system know that you are secure, which promotes muscle relaxation and lowered heart rate.

Hear:

Next, pinpoint three distinct sounds around you. Listen to each of their tones, volumes, and frequencies. The shuffling of paper, footsteps on the ground, or someone's voice are all examples of potential sounds you may pick up on around you.
Touch/Move:

Lastly, focus on feeling three distinct sensations (i.e., feet on the ground, hands on a chair) or moving three different parts of your body. Concentrating on the physical helps pull your mind out of a downward spiral of anxious hypothetical scenarios.
